Rivers people are strong people who are not intimidated by political terrorists, neither are they influenced by judicial manipulations. When President Goodluck Jonathan quietly relinquished power to the incumbent APC-led government by congratulating President Buhari even before the election results were announced, peace-loving Rivers people, regardless of political affiliations, applauded him. The PDP in Rivers State did so because it was a never-before-heard-of act of patriotism in Africa as a whole which is infamous for its power tussles. The APC also applauded President Jonathan’s move because he handed power over to them in a manner they publicly confessed they did not expect – peacefully and honorably. If the election results had favored President Jonathan, however, it is obvious that the nation would have been on a different course right now. This is easy to tell, given the extent the APC affiliates in Rivers State are willing to go in order to unlawfully take over the State by manipulating the judicial system, promoting false propaganda and interfering with justice. THIS WILL NOT WORK FOR THEM IN RIVERS STATE!
The previous APC-led administration openly declared there would be no election in Rivers State and did everything in its power to disenfranchise Rivers people, asking them not to come out to vote. In fact, as we all know, the then Governor Amaechi himself refused to cast his personal vote, moving from one polling unit to another, way out of his LGA where he was clearly not needed. Elections held and the collective voices of Rivers people were heard: 1,029,102 (over one million) Rivers people voted for Governor Wike and 124,896 (less than one hundred and twenty-five thiousand) votes went to the APC. It was clear; Rivers people did not want a government that spent 33.9billion tax payers’ money on a useless, needless, and ultimately abandoned project – Monorail.
After election results were announced on April 13, 2015, the APC led government, having shut down the state judiciary for over a year, went to patronize courts and lawyers from neighboring states with law suit applications to stop the transition of power to the newly elected administration, simply because it was not their party. They failed and Governor Wike was sworn into power on May 29, 2015, as was the incumbent APC-led federal government of President Muhammadu Buhari. Desperate for power and infuriated by the smooth enthronement of the elected Government of Rivers State, these same people filed a petition to The Rivers State election tribunal which was unfortunately relocated out of Rivers State because the previous APC government closed the courts in the state. After weeks of going back and forth in a caseless case, the tribunal in Abuja cancelled the elections in Rivers state, with faulty card readers as its basis for doing so. Meanwhile, in some states like Lagos, the tribunal against the incumbent APC government ruled that non-use of electronic card readers was no legal basis for the cancellation of an election guided by an Electoral Act which predates card readers.
These are clearly manipulations of justice, but we remain undiscouraged and focused on developing the state. Rivers State could not have chosen a better Government. Thank you, Rivers people, for supporting Governor Wike. There are more projects to be announced really soon.
God bless Rivers State.
