Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has charged newly inaugurated Governing Councils to resolve existing conflicts in the state-owned tertiary institutions, noting that they must stabilise the institutions for faster growth.
Inaugurating the Governing Councils of Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic and Rivers State College of Arts and Science at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Governor Wike stated that members of the councils were carefully selected to resolve the challenges facing the schools.
Governor Wike said that he had to appoint the acting vice Chancellor of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology from outside the university because the academic staff of the school were deeply polarised.
He called on the new governing councils to take immediate steps to appoint substantive heads of the institutions, as the heads of the four schools are currently operating in acting capacity.
The governor advised the governing councils to work harmoniously with their respective managements to avoid the pitfalls of the past which stagnated development in the institutions.
He said: “The governing councils working with the managements should ensure the stability of academic programmes. Unnecessary strike should be avoided”.
He urged the governing councils to implement measures that will improve the revenue base of the schools in line with the current economic realities.
“All the state-owned tertiary institutions must improve their revenue base.”.
Responding on behalf of the councils, Chairman of the Governing Council of Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Justice Iche Ndu assured the governor that the council members will work towards transforming the schools.
