Rivers State Governor, Chief Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike says Nigeria can get out-of the present economic recession if adequate attention is accorded to Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in the Country.
Chief Wike who stated this at the 6th International Christian Business Exhibition and Conference organized by the Marketplace Apostles Empowerment Foundation in Port Harcourt, said there is an urgent need to re-direct the orientation of Youth and Nigerians in general from the pursuit of white collar jobs to entrepreneurial ventures.
Represented by his Deputy, Dr. (Mrs.) Ipalibo Harry Banigo, the Governor described the theme of the event “Entrepreneurial Development for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in Nigeria” as timely especially as it is coming at a time when Nigeria’s economy is in recession and has thrown more Nigerians into the labour market in addition to the ever-rising profile of un-employment and inflation in the Country.
The Governor also advocated for entrepreneurial training for young people as a way of preparing them for the future to become great Entrepreneurs and stimulate the Nation’s industrialization.
“Following the country’s economic recession today, many Nigerians have lost their Jobs in the banking, Oil and other sectors of the Economy, and many others are unemployed. There is indeed an urgent need to re-direct our people’s orientation from the pursuit of white collar jobs to entrepreneurial ventures.” The Governor emphasized.
He stated that in order to encourage entrepreneurial activities in the State, the Rivers State Government has created the enabling environment for businesses to grow, by promoting security network, provision of good roads and street lights, abolition of double taxation as well as the re-invigoration of the Rivers State Microfinance Agency to serve the people better.
Barr. Wike commended the Marketplace Apostles Empowerment Foundation for their effort towards raising leaders in the business/commercial sub-sector in the state, by equipping men and women with kingdom principle to enable them to achieve success in their businesses.
The Governor enjoined young people to allow their God-given creativity to flourish and stop the blame game. He promised to partner the Foundation as a platform to share information, encourage young Entrepreneurs and build up new business out fits.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and President, Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, PHCCIMA, Dr. Emi Membere-Otaji said the recession facing Nigeria today is enough signal that the Nation should no longer depend on Oil as the Country’s main revenue earner.
Dr. Mambere-Otaji advised Nigerians especially the leadership to go to the basics which borders on the encouragement of entrepreneurship as a conscious effort towards economic diversification, wealth creation and employment generation adding that if the resources that are abound in the country are properly harnessed, there would be less dependence on oil.
